Talking to our kids about the birds and the bees is not an easy task. I always ask myself, what is the right age to start talking about it? What information is ok to give now and what information should be introduced later? My older child is now 7 and is in second grade. We have not had any kind of birds and bees talk yet, because I just did not know how to bring it up and what she already knew and so on. I always thought that she was just too young to understand any of it and it could wait. I recently watched Birds + Bees + Kids The Basics with Amy Lang, and had all my questions answered. Amy has been working as a sexual health educator since the age of 22 and really puts everything in a nice perspective. She explains that talking to kids about sex is not just having that one talk, its about giving them ongoing information. She explains why you should start talking about some things at a young age, and what you can wait and explain later on. She also demonstrates how you can incorporate your values into the conversation, so no matter what they are, you know how to relay them to your children.
“Amy Lang makes talking about sex feel like talking about winning the lottery – there are a million wonderful things to do, a million awesome ways to have the conversation.”
Seattle's Child Magazine
After watching Amy's video I now feel confident that I will know how to talk to my kids about sex. I think it is important that our children have that information, and now I know how to give it to them. She also talks about how having an open flow of information about sex with our kids will help them be able to talk to us about other aspects of their life. I love her modern approach on this matter. You can purchase the DVD by visiting Amy's website here. Amy has offered to give one of my readers online access to watch the full video, so if you want to learn about effective ways to talk to your children about sex, you can enter below:
